The Volunteer Nurse Who Almost Didn’t Go
Ana had never worked in disaster response before. A nurse for twelve years, she almost turned down the request to join a medical team heading into one of the hardest hit regions.
“I kept thinking, what if I’m not enough,” she said. “But then I thought about what it would mean if no one went at all.”
Two weeks later, Ana and her team have treated over 400 patients, many of whom hadn’t seen a doctor in days. She’s since said she plans to return for a second deployment.
Volunteers like Ana rely on funding for transportation, lodging, and medical supplies to keep doing this work. The Sponsor a Medical Volunteer program exists to make sure people like her can say yes, and keep saying yes, to the families who need them.
